Robust Solutions of Uncertain Quadratic and Conic-Quadratic Problems

Abstract. We consider a conic-quadratic (and in particular a quadratically constrained) optimization problem with uncertain data, known only to reside in some uncertainty set U . The robust counterpart of such a problem leads usually to an NP-hard semidefinite problem; this is the case, for example, when U is given as the intersection of ellipsoids or as an n-dimensional box. For these cases we...

Extended Matrix Cube Theorems with Applications to µ-Theory in Control

In this paper, we study semi-infinite systems of Linear Matrix Inequalities which are generically NP-hard. For these systems, we introduce computationally tractable approximations and derive quantitative guarantees of their quality. As applications, we discuss the problem of maximizing a Hermitian quadratic form over the complex unit cube and the problem of bounding the complex structured singu...

Robust solutions of Linear Programming problems contaminated with uncertain data

Optimal solutions of Linear Programming problems may become severely infeasible if the nominal data is slightly perturbed. We demonstrate this phenomenon by studying 90 LPs from the well-known NETLIB collection. We then apply the Robust Optimization methodology (Ben-Tal and Nemirovski [1-3]; El Ghaoui et al. [5,6]) to produce “robust” solutions of the above LPs which are in a sense immuned agai...

Costs and benefits of robust optimization

In this exposition the robust counterpart approach by Ben-Tal, El Ghaoui and Nemirovski is investigated with respect to its costs and benefits, with the focus on the costs of robustification. Although robust optimization has gained more and more interest among both academics and practitioners and although this certainly represents a well-established theory, it is to some extent unclear, if and ...
